What's Changed: A Simpler Way to Assign Step-Based Submittal Reviewers
We've streamlined how you assign reviewers on step-based submittals. It now matches how design teams actually think — pick the disciplines that need to review, and add a steps when you need them.
Why it's better
- It matches how you think about review. Assign disciplines — Structural, Mechanical, Electrical — instead of hunting for individual names. The discipline's default assignees are notified automatically.
- The simple case is now the default. Every step-based submittal starts with a single step where all disciplines review in parallel. No configuration needed for the most common workflow — just assign and go. Add steps only when you want a sequential order.
- Fewer decisions. The Reviewer / Submitter reviewer-type picker is gone. Every new step is a standard reviewer step, so there's one less thing to get right.
- Faster onboarding. New team members have far less to learn before they can log and route a submittal.
Still need a specific person to review?
You can. Assign the discipline they belong to, then edit the assignees on that discipline for this submittal. The default assignees only pre-populate the list; you're free to change who's on it per submittal. → Document & Workflow Assignees
What this means for existing submittals
- In-flight submittals keep working. Older steps that name individuals still display them — you can remove an individual but new reviewers are added by discipline going forward.
- Templates that reference individuals are deprecated — visible but blocked from use. An admin can update them to use disciplines to bring them back. → How to update a template
Were you using a "Submitter" step so the General Contractor could add their file?
You don't need a Submitter step. The GC can upload their file directly to the submittal's Details section — same as the prime and consultants. Just log the submittal and have the GC add their file.
